Claire McKenna, CCC, SLP
Claire received her master's in Communication Sciences and Disorders from Emerson College in Boston, MA, where she specialized in treatment of fluency disorders under the New England Fluency Program, as well as treatment of language delays and/or disorders in young children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). After receiving her certification of clinical competence from the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA), she remained in Boston for several years, where she continued her focus on early language development, particularly for autistic children. She later returned to the greater DC area, where she grew up.
Claire believes in a holistic, relationship-based approach to therapy. She strives to first establish trust and rapport with each of the children and families she works alongside, emphasizing motivation, consistency and enjoyment within her sessions to ensure therapy is successful. Claire's training and experience has taught her to look comprehensively at each case, taking all physical, emotional, sensory and developmental factors into account to identify the child's current obstacles to communication and the best method of treatment to overcome them. Her career has connected her with children from a wide range of backgrounds and developmental profiles, and led her to a deeper study of areas such as Gestalt Language Processing, Phonological Disorders, Augmentative Alternative Communication, as well as Feeding Disorders and communication difficulties arising in Autism Spectrum Disorder.
