Keisha and I talk about how play can provide children with opportunities to learn problem solving, social communication, empathy, leadership and the natural consequences of their actions. They also learn independence and confidence through play. A lot of these skills are learned through experience, but also through them mimicking and watching the adult playing with them

Meredith Polsky Interview

In this episode I was graced with the opportunity to speak with Meredith Polsky about her work treating and guiding children with selective mutism. Meredith has been a driving force in the greater Maryland community helping those with selective mutism through Growing Minds Therapy.

During this eye opening interview, we discuss some of the stigma around those who exhibit selective mutism and how their families are processing and dealing with this. We touch on how to best support your child, how to direct others to support your child, what to do, what not to do and why some kids are just shy and others have selective mutism.

Some believe it is a choice made by the child in order to gain or retain control when they feel out of control. In reality, selective mutism is not about control. Behaviors such as hitting, refusing to go to the bathroom and screaming are more geared towards gaining control, while selective mutism is more about sensory processing, brain function and anxiety in children.

Gabriele Nicolet of SpeechKids has been a fantastic resource for our family. Over the course of two years, Gabriele helped our daughter transition from a shy and tentative speaker with intelligibility issues to a confident, talkative, and articulate child. Gabriele is patient, caring, and knowledgeable. Our daughter loved the time they spent together and the warm relationship they shared. Gabriele demonstrated a genuine understanding of our child and insight into her strengths and weaknesses. We cannot speak highly enough of Gabriele; we recommend her wholeheartedly!
